Preparedness for AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol in Nigeria

On Tuesday, 5 March 2024, our Partner, A Tope Tokan-Lawal, attended the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol Workshop in Lagos convened by the National Action Committee (NAC) on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The event, titled, “Preparedness for AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol in Nigeria”, hosted International Trade policymakers, experts, and stakeholders who discussed the transformative potential of digital trade under the AfCFTA framework. During the event the NAC-AfCFTA’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Olusegun Awolowo, emphasized their commitment to propel Nigeria to the forefront of digital trade under the AfCFTA. A special message from the AfCFTA secretariat also expressed their commitment to promoting digital trade across the continent.

Two panel sessions hosted representatives of sectors, including the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), fintech associations, and key players in the private sector. The experts, stakeholders, and discussants were unanimous in underscoring the need to create a conducive regulatory environment, strengthen digital infrastructure, promote digital literacy, collaborate with other agencies such as Port Authority, Customs, and create even more awareness to unlock meaningful opportunities within the Nigerian digital trade ecosystem and attract the right investment to Nigeria.
