“The aim is not to ostracise the men but to show that we can stand side by side with them.” – Hon. Justice Adenike-Coker
“We need to be more intentional about bringing women into the space.” – Funmi Roberts
On 7 February 2024, our partner, A Tope Tokan-Lawal, attended the Women in Arbitration breakfast hosted by the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) as part of its West African Roadshow 2024.
Our partner had the privilege of joining the LCIA Director General – Professor Dr Jacomijn van Haersolte-van Hof, the LCIA African Users’ Council, Arbitrators, in-house counsel, practitioners, academics and members of the local and international business community for the networking breakfast.
While acknowledging the LCIA’s efforts to enhance gender diversity in arbitration, with almost 50% of all arbitrators selected by the LCIA Court in 2022 being women, it was also noted that the participation of women as co-arbitrators and parties remained low and significantly lagged. Women practitioners were thus invited to engage in discussions on how to increase their inclusion in arbitration and promote diversity.
Key speakers at the breakfast included Hon. Justice Adenike-Coker; Funke Adekoya, SAN; Adedoyin Rhodes-Vivour SAN C.Arb; Folashade Alli SAN, C.ARB; Olusola Adegbonmire; Professor Yinka Omorogbe, SAN; Funmi Roberts; Funke Agbor; and Perenami Momodu.
